Gulab Jamun

It’s always about the food, isn’t it?

Or, is that just me?

Eh, who cares! 🙂

We had a brilliant Diwali last Wednesday, cooked till 2am in the morning last Tuesday so I just thought I’d share some of our delectable delights with you and keep the calories to myself.

Sound like a fair bargain?

Anyway, I hope you’re all wonderful and happy!

Enjoy and see you soon 🙂

Dear Santa,

I thought I’d get in early with my requests seeing as I know how busy you are at this time of year.

I did try sending you a letter back in January but one of your Elves sent me a slightly “short” response outlining that I quit bugging you till December basically. Don’t worry, I have contacted the “Santa Listens” Customer Service hotline on 1300 LEAVE ME ALONE to complain but suspiciously ended up feeling like that number was solely made for me. I know – ridiculous right? That’s what I thought. Anyhow, enough of that because we both know how much I love to ramble so here goes. My extremely timid (may I just point out because I have been told on occasion that my demands are never ending and slightly ridiculously unachievable) list of wants!

1. World Peace. I get it; everyone wants it so why are you dragging your heels about it already? It’s so clichéd; it is now a joke in movies that is frankly, beginning to get a little tiresome. I’m not sure what all the fuss is about with living in harmony with one another seeing as we only have centuries of historical testament to the turmoil and wake of devastation hate leaves in its path as it hurricanes through everyone’s life. Oh hang on, the penny just dropped. We’re the ones who have to make a conscious decision to stop it from ruining our lives? Hmm yeah, well I see your point, okay scratch that, it’s a human gift, not a Santa one. Well then, what about my next one?

2. Celebrating our differences. C’mon, seriously?! How can this not already have been presented to someone, I mean even if the receiver didn’t like it – hello, rewrap it and pass it onto the next person on the gift list. The world is made up of so many wonderfully, awe inspiring cultures and nationalities; it’s basically a Petri dish for learning viruses, you know – the good kind. What? Wait, this is another human gift? Oh right, fine, people need to make a conscious decision to let people with other perspectives in and be respectful of ideas that don’t fit ours. Alright, I’ll give you that one too. This is getting embarrassing. Moving on …

3. The Environment is going to Shite. I don’t know if you’ve noticed Santa but your home is apparently melting. In fact, whether you believe in the whole ruckus climate change enthusiasts have thrown up or not, I think it’s safe to say that our beautiful planet isn’t what it used to be. Really, what is Mother Nature doing? She really does need to take a little more care of herself, let’s be honest, age is just a number and now the situation is getting dire. I’ve heard Polar Bears are the next item on the chopping block – I mean, what? Cute white fluffy bears? What is happening with the world because that is just wrong! Okay Santa, you really need to stop skirting on your responsibilities and snoozing on the job (as you can see from the above photo, I have proof). How can this be a people present? Right, I did get the memo outlining that we just all need to be a little less greedy on the planet’s resources, you know with the three cars for a family of two and the fifty potato chip packet reserves we have stocked in the pantry just in case I get hungry exactly 467.987 days from now. Fine – I’ll give this one to you too -_-

Just for the record though, I am not happy about this. There isn’t a single present on this list I can’t give myself which just sux. Now, a nice red Porsche – surely that is a Santa gift. I even chose red as an homage to you know who 😉

So I’m guessing it’s going to be a waste of time sending you out that long list I have been meticulously updating throughout the year outlining my nice versus naughty deeds?

Hmm, I’ll send it to you anyway, just in case. Can you please send me your updated address, for some reason the letters I keep sending your way get returned back to me unopened with the message “Santa does not live here anymore”. What’s that all about anyway?

Happy New Year!

Arguably one of the most popular festivals in India, The Festival of Lights or what Indians refer to as Diwali is tomorrow. Considered as the Hindu New Year, this celebratory event is all about rejoicing in fresh, new beginnings, revelling in the brightness of illuminated knowledge as well as happiness, exulting in the victory of good over evil with hope winning over despair, and wishing prosperity and wealth for everyone!

Diwali for my sister and I has always been about frolicking fun after a mad rush of spring cleaning with friends and family, praying for peace – emotional, spiritual and physical, lots and lots of lights and alighted “Diyas” (candles), colourful “Rangoli” displays (intricate vibrant Indian designed floor patterns composed of multi-coloured powders), making “Malas” (flower necklaces), painting rice flour feet imprints throughout the house in representation of the Goddess Lakshmi entering our abode, and who can forget, a gigantic amount of amazingly, delectably, scrumptious food, both savoury and sweet.

I’d like to hurl my kindest, most joyous and greatest celebratory hug at you for this Diwali. May your life be filled with happiness, enlightened knowledge, understanding, peace, wealth in a spiritual and monetary sense 🙂 , celebration and good, wholesome, cherished company forever.

Happy Diwali to everyone!!! /Aap Sab Ko Deepavali Ki Hardik Shubhkamnaye!!!

Why I Love October …

1. We’re finally into double digits, which makes me feel like I’ve achieved something, namely close to another year with my brain intact (okay fine, most of it anyway).

2. It’s smack bang in the middle of Spring where everything is starting to awake, ready to p-a-r-t-y!!!

3. This year, it’s when all the celebrations happen for Indians – Navratri, Karwa Chauth, the Festival of Lights (Diwali) and who doesn’t like a good celebration, right?

4. Summer Holidays are just around the corner – Aussie sun, Aussie Beaches, Barbeques (even for vegetarians), shorts and string tops, good, safe tans!!! Oh, and did I mention heaps and heaps of ICE CREAM!!!!!!!

Now explain to me again, how anyone could possibly not be ecstatic about October? 🙂

Happy Birthday to my Best Friend

Even though today isn’t my birthday, whenever this day comes around, I feel like I’m the one who is receiving the best gift there is anywhere and everywhere!

My sister was born today and there isn’t one moment where I’m not grateful to my parents for giving me her. There is no one else on the world who I would rather spend time with, talk to, hug, laugh with, fight with … basically love, then Mayunka.

I believe we have a different variety of soul mates, and my adorable sister is definitely my main one. We’re both such inseparable anomalies as we couldn’t be more different, but more similar at the same time. Our personalities are like chalk and cheese – I’m a thinker, she’s the yapper, I’m the quiet one, she’s the one that rocks a party, I blend into the background, she’s a head turner, I’m the shy one, she’s the flamboyant one, I write my thoughts, she is outspoken … the list goes on really. In the end however, we agree on all the things that matter, the politics, what humanity is about, morality, the importance of loyalty and so much more.

Mayunka is my rock. The reason for my sanity, why I don’t slit my wrists half the time – the one that makes me see the rainbow on the horizon when darkness threatens to overpower me, my light at the end of the dark tunnel when I am about to succumb to all the nonsensical turmoil, my lifeline when I need one most.

My confidant, my secret keeper, my inspiration, most importantly one of the three reasons I house for continuing to live and exist.

People will often tell you money, food, shelter, clothing, the latest fashion accessories make life liveable but my sister makes life enjoyably worth it.

So this is to my best friend ever. I pray you’re my sister in every life time and I love you so much more than words or anything but raw emotion could express.

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear MAYUNKA!!! Happy Birthday to you!!! xoxo
